    Essential Skills of Leadership

Managers and team leaders will be able to:

Maintain and Enhance Team Member Self-Esteem

This is probably the single most important skill a manager or team leader can have. It is the ability to provide direction, evaluate performance, correct work habits, deal with complaints, and resolve conflicts while supporting a team member’s sense of self-respect and dignity.

    Focus on Behavior

Problems on the job are solved more effectively and less stressfully when managers and team leaders deal with people’s actions rather than with their attitudes or personal characteristics.

    Encourage Team Member Participation

Involving team members in decision-making, problem solving, and other non-routine, on-the-job activities is one of the manager’s or team leader’s key motivational tools.

    Essential Skills of Communicating

Managers and team leaders will be able to:

Create a Climate of Open Communication

The bedrock of good communication is openness—the extent to which the organization and its people support the free exchange of open, honest communication. Openness contributes to a positive communication climate more than any other factor.

    Design Clear, Concise Messages

Messages that are well designed are clear and concise. Managers and team leaders need to organize their thoughts and speak to each team member’s level of understanding.

    Manage Nonverbal Behaviors Effectively

Voice tone, facial expressions, gestures, and posture are some of the nonverbal factors that managers and team leaders must understand and learn to use for effective communication.

    Listen to Communicate

Effective communication cannot take place without effective listening, which includes the ability to reflect, probe, support, and advise.

    Coaching For Improved Performance

As skilled coaches, your managers and supervisors will lead your staff to higher levels of performance

One-on-one coaching is one of the most effective tools you can use to inspire employee motivation and achievement. The use of coaching  in the workplace creates a sense of personal attention and wellbeing that signals to employees that they are valued.

The four modules covered in this seminar are:

    Coaching Job Skills:

Participants will learn to effectively teach employees how to perform a job, task, or skill.  They will learn to recognize when a performance problem is due to lack of proper training or requires some other action to improve the situation.

    Effective Discipline:

Traditionally an area where conflict is likely to occur due to hurt feelings and resentment. We offer a method that teaches managers and supervisors how to change employees’ unacceptable behavior without bruising egos. The focus on self-respect and self-discipline makes this a valuable aid for team building.

    Improving Work Habits:

A proven method for addressing issues such as chronic absenteeism, lateness, dress code, and workplace conduct. Participants learn how to confront problems quickly, with an approach that is supportive and non threatening.

    Providing Performance Feedback:

Participants will learn the preferred evaluation method of experts. This 3-step process involves defining performance standards, asking employees to measure their own performance against the standard, and providing a final evaluation that makes sense to the employee.

    Supervisor/Employee Communication Modules

High morale and sense of community in the workplace is, above all, defined by the level of communication between supervisor and employee. Participants will learn to communicate well, and set a standard for communication that employees will trust and practice in return.

    Communicating up:

Most managers and team leaders understand the importance of upward communication, but few take responsibility for communicating well with their own managers. Participants will learn how to frame communication so that a desired result is achieved.

    Managing Complaints:

As the leaders on the front line, managers and team leaders are often the first to hear team member complaints. And though sometimes they may seem unimportant, each complaint should be addressed and resolved. This module shows how to resolve simple complaints and identify the hidden agendas that often underlie the chronic grievances.

    Delegating:

Participants will master the skills needed to effectively assign work to others. By communicating expectations clearly, and encouraging participation and involvement, managers can use delegating to improve team members' skills.

    Developing Performance Goals and Standards:

When managers and team leaders are unable to clearly spell out an organization’s specific goals, team members will not know how to meet their expectations. This module shows trainees how to establish specific, measurable, attainable, results-oriented, and time-framed performance goals. It also illustrates how to gain team member agreement and commitment to those performance goals.

    Resolving Conflicts:

Managers will develop skills to identify the source of team member conflicts. Using effective communication and management techniques, managers can help individuals understand another point of view and move beyond the conflict.

    Supporting Change:

Managers will learn to understand and to interpret change. By understanding it, managers can more clearly communicate change to their team. This clear communication helps to reduce misunderstanding and anxiety. It also helps the change initiative gain acceptance more quickly, preventing lost productivity and decreased performance.
